Tate a Vamp - He Woulda Thunk It

Postby China Doll » 30 Mar 2010, 18:37

Upon yet another reading of At Graves End, I came across this interaction between Bones and Tate.

(Bones) "In a hundred years, this job and your boss will be long gone, but you'll still be my creation. You'll owe me your fealty unlessI permit you your own line or you challenge me and take it. Sure you want to sign on for that." At Graves End, Chapter 1.

(Tate) " I can handle it." At Graves End, Chapter 1.

This is Tate's response to Bones' concern with Tate's decision to become one of the first on Cat's team to become a vampire. Why does Tate make this decision - Cat - the job - or to exist long enough to overtake Bones.

I believe Tate accepts this new undead life to exist long enough to overtake Bones.

What do you think?

I sooo agree with you.

But we all know Bones would kick his arse in a fight (whether it's now or a hundred years from now) and Cat would dis-own him as a friend or probably worst, stick a stake in his heart and twist.

He was very prejudiced against vamps in OFITG, so I would have to say it was a total pissing contest move to look better toward Cat. At least, I feel in his mind, that put him on even footing with Bones (as if). In his mind, he would be able to do the same as Bones (again, as if) and be there for the eternity for Cat. So I do believe Cat was a major factor in his decision.

With that being said, I also think that his job was a secondary motivator. He seems to be a dedicated leader and member. We see that in OFITG, after they battle Sunshine for the first time. He is Second in command, outside of Cat changing over, he would be the next in line. So I am sure that the chain of command did play a role in that decision as well.

The question I pose is, if the ceremony with WM occurred first with the power swap and Bones could have read Tate's mind. Would Bones still have changed him??

and yes mun, I still say she needs to twist the freaking knife!

Bones probably would have still changed Tate over even if he could have read his mind. He had, after all, gave Don his word that he would changed selected people over for him. And Bones is a man of his word. I think the only difference would have been that he would have kept a whole lot closer eye on every move Tate made.

And yes, Cat really needs to twist that knife the next time she sticks one in Tate. I think he's gone way past being an interesting character to just being a major annoyance to both Cat and Bones.
I never argue with anyone with as many sharp teeth as you've got.

LOL

I actually like Tate, there is something intriguing about him. I would like to know what the future holds for him.

Cat was a big factor in getting changed over. He knows Cat will live a very very long time and wants to be there for her.

Yes he is being ridiculous if he thinks he can wait it out and take on Bones . Bones will always be older than he is. I just hope he doesnt do anything stupid in book 5,6, or 7.

LOL. Yes, there is a lot there to discover. We have tried to pry some (ANY!) explanation from Jeaniene as to why Tate is the way he is, but *sigh* to no avail. We will have to wait. But speculation is always welcome! :D

Well, there is a phrase made famous in Forrest Gump, "Stupid is as stupid does." Going up against Bones, your sire, in light of all the info that has transpired? Yeah, I hope he mellows out and moves on. I wonder since he knows he cannot beat Bones single-handedly if he will join forces with someone to help him achieve his goals...hmmm *wagging eye-brows*. Of course, that too is pure speculation. :-)

Frosties,

Would any one be for Tate getting his own book, so we can learn more about him. I know I hate him; my daughter would scold me; she says Mommy hate is a bad word, so I'll say I strongly dislike him. My husband understands him, guy thing. Many others like him and wish for an HEA for him before Bones makes him toast ;) ;) ;) (just speculation).

What do you all think? ;) ;) ;)
