I just completed the stand-off in the kitchen when Vlad, Mencheres and Cat had their power-play. Wow... The music from the Good, the Bad and the Ugly was going through my mind when Cat and Mencheres faced off. That was freaking AWESOME!
To borrow from the Fever series, I feel like Cat has gone through a transformation in this book to Cat 3.0 (2.0 when Bones changed her over) as she finally accepts the level of strength and violence necessary to survive in the undead world.
When they captured the ghoul who attacked them in the hotel elevator, Cat wanted to let him go to garner "goodwill" with the ghoul nation. Bones and Vlad helped her realize that kind of thinking will only get her killed. Then JF separated Bones and Cat to allow her to complete the transformation. At the drive-in she decapitated the ghoul who was restrained without even entertaining the thought of letting him go. I believe the level of ruthlessness she displayed at the drive-in would not have been possible had Bones been there. Remember when Bones didn't want Cat to witness the his brutality in dealing with Max? He believed it would kill something special between them. I think Cat subconsciously would have held back if Bones had been there for the same reason and let him do the dirty work. In addition, Cat would never had developed the ability to control the Remnants as Bones would have killed anyone who attacked her for any reason. All that said, Cat will always have a good heart and will only act out when the fight is brought to her!
sigh.... I'm so enjoying this re-read watching Cat come into her own!
I also believe in a way, Don's death was a catalyst for this transformation, the last true link to her old life is now gone.
Moving on....
